180 Years Young: How GGMC & Sir J.J Hospital is Embracing AI to Guide Every Patient’s Journey

If you’ve ever stepped foot inside Grant Government Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals (GGMC & JJH), you’ll know the feeling. It’s not just a hospital. It’s a city within a city – 40+ acres sprawling with multiple buildings, countless departments, research units, and historic landmarks. For over 180 years, this institution has been a beacon of excellence in medical education and patient care. And yet, what’s most remarkable is this: despite being steeped in history, GGMC & JJH has never been afraid to embrace the future. Its doors are wide open to innovative ways of making the patient journey smoother, the campus experience more intuitive, and the medical learning process smarter.

The Lost Visitor Story

A few months ago, one of our team members at M.I.C.E Labs stood outside the main entrance and watched a scene unfold.

A frail elderly gentleman, clutching his prescription, was trying to find the Neurology Department. He stopped one passerby, then another, then a security guard… but still couldn’t find his way. The directions were well-meaning but got lost in the rush of hospital life.

The man wasn’t alone. Every day, hundreds of patients, caregivers, and even new medical students wander the campus trying to locate the right building, floor, or office. The signage is often missing, unclear, or too far apart to be truly helpful. This isn’t just a matter of convenience. For a patient in distress, every extra minute spent searching is a minute of anxiety, discomfort, and sometimes worsening health.

At Medical Innovation Creativity and Entrepreneurship (M.I.C.E) Labs (http://www.micelabs.in), our mission has always been to bridge the gap between medical innovation and human experience. Watching people struggle with something as basic – yet as critical – as finding their way sparked a question: “What if we could make this entire campus accessible at people’s fingertips?”

We also knew that in today’s world, the first place people look for help is the internet – for us, that meant the GGMC & Sir J.J. Hospital official website. But like many institutional sites, it couldn’t possibly:

  • Contain every small but crucial piece of departmental information
  • Make it instantly accessible in the middle of a medical emergency
  • Converse and guide a visitor in real time like a human could

That’s when the idea took shape: an AI-powered Chatbot integrated directly into the GGMC & JJH website. Think of it as a virtual guide, available 24/7, answering everything from patient queries to navigating them to the right place. And it’s not just directions. This AI Chatbot is designed to:

  • Provide basic to advanced patient awareness information
  • Support medical student queries
  • Share department-specific instructions
  • Offer educational resources and direct links to the right web pages

We partnered with BeyondChats, to make this vision a reality. Currently, we’re in the pilot phase, which involves:

  • Training the AI – to give accurate, relevant, and empathetic answers
  • Testing live – patients and visitors can scan a QR code and chat instantly
  • Refining through feedback – each question asked helps us make the bot smarter and more intuitive

These next two months are not just a tech test. They are an empathy experiment – to see how well technology can reduce confusion, save time, and create a stress-free experience.

Why It Matters?

Hospitals are places of care. But for many, they’re also places of confusion and anxiety.

A 10-minute shorter search for a department can mean catching a doctor’s round instead of missing it.
A clear set of directions can mean a calmer, more confident patient.
A quick answer to a procedural doubt can mean better preparation for treatment or tests.

And for a medical student, easy access to information means less time chasing details and more time learning

The Vision Behind the Vision

his forward-thinking leap wouldn’t have been possible without the visionary leadership of our Dean, Dr. Ajay Bhandarwar.
Known for his commitment to both clinical excellence and modernizing the medical education ecosystem, Dr. Bhandarwar has championed this initiative from the very beginning. His belief?

“Innovation in Healthcare is not just about new treatments. It’s also about reimagining the patient journey so that care begins before the consultation.”

For now, it starts with something simple: scan a QR code placed across the campus.
Ask your question. Get your answer. No queues. No confusion. No wandering.

At M.I.C.E Labs, we believe that healthcare innovation is not always about giant machines or expensive tech.
Sometimes, it’s about making sure a lost, worried patient finds their way without feeling helpless. The AI Chatbot is more than a feature. It’s a symbol of GGMC & JJH’s readiness to embrace the future while holding on to its 180-year legacy of healing. It’s proof that a historic institution can still be a pioneer in enhancing the patient journey.
And it’s our way of saying: “We see you. We hear you. And we’re making it easier for you to get the care you came for.”
