Large hospitals are often complex ecosystems. Multiple buildings, specialized departments, diagnostic centers, laboratories, wards, and administrative offices are spread across large campuses. For patients and their families—especially first-time visitors—simply locating the right department can become a challenge.
This is why every hospital, particularly large public institutions, should consider implementing a dedicated navigation or wayfinding tool. Much like the digital maps we rely on in airports, malls, or university campuses, a hospital navigation system can guide visitors clearly and efficiently to their destination.
Such tools can provide step-by-step directions to departments, display floor maps, highlight elevators and ramps, and help visitors plan the quickest route within the hospital premises. This not only saves time but also helps people feel more confident and in control during an already stressful visit.
Beyond convenience, navigation tools also improve hospital efficiency. Staff members often spend a significant amount of time giving directions to patients and visitors. With a digital system in place, these routine interruptions can be reduced, allowing healthcare professionals to focus more on patient care.
In today’s digital age, the expectation for instant information is higher than ever. Patients want quick answers, clear directions, and reliable guidance. Hospitals that adopt navigation tools are not only improving convenience—they are modernizing the overall patient experience.
From Wayfinding to Smart Assistance at Sir J.J Hospital
At Medical Innovation Creativity and Entrepreneurship (M.I.C.E) Labs, innovation is driven by a simple philosophy: improving healthcare by improving the human experience within it. Observing the challenges visitors face while navigating the vast campus of GGMC & Sir J.J. Hospital inspired a simple but powerful idea—what if guidance within the hospital could be as easy as asking a question?
Recognizing that most people instinctively turn to the internet for answers, the team began exploring ways to make the GGMC & Sir JJH website more interactive and helpful. However, traditional websites often struggle to provide instant, conversational assistance or cover every small but important piece of information a visitor might need.
This led to the development of an AI-powered chatbot, integrated directly into the hospital’s website. Designed as a virtual assistant available 24/7, the chatbot acts as a digital guide that can help patients, visitors, and students access information quickly and easily.
The chatbot is capable of:
- Guiding users to the correct departments within the hospital
- Providing patient awareness information
- Answering queries from medical students
- Sharing department-specific instructions
- Directing users to relevant resources and webpages

To bring this initiative to life, M.I.C.E Labs partnered with BeyondChats. The project is currently in its pilot phase, where the AI system is being trained to provide accurate and empathetic responses. Visitors can scan QR codes placed across the campus and begin chatting instantly with the virtual assistant.
The initiative is supported by the visionary leadership of Dean Dr. Ajay Bhandarwar, who believes that healthcare innovation is not limited to medical treatments alone. Improving how patients navigate and interact with the hospital environment is equally important.
As he emphasizes, innovation in healthcare must begin even before a patient meets a doctor. Making information accessible, directions clear, and assistance readily available can transform the entire experience of visiting a hospital.
The AI chatbot represents a step toward that vision. It shows how a historic institution like GGMC & JJ Hospital can continue evolving while preserving its long-standing legacy of care. Sometimes innovation is not about large machines or complex technologies—it is about ensuring that every patient who arrives at the hospital can find their way, ask their questions, and receive help without hesitation.
