The Intent of M.I.C.E.

Harrison in one hand, Stetho in other

Can the scope of a medicine go any further?

Well we can’t deny the fact that has been stated above that all the medics have just studied their whole life so that they can treat the patients and provide them the correct but the best treatment. This method is being followed since time unknown. The Doctor uses the methods and instruments devised by the sector proudly called as the Engineers, who receive the problem statement from the doctors and come up with solutions for the same. These methods have given us the instruments that are being used right from the General Practitioners Clinic to the Multispecialty Operation Theatre. But what if, a Doctor or someone from the medical fraternity comes across any problem? Do they approach someone? Do they wait for the person to come up with some idea that may or may not be patient and doctor friendly? What do they do? Well, let’s approach it this way. What if the person has a solution to the problem? Would the person be able to convert his scribbles to a real-time working machine? If this would have been some 19th century, the answer would have been NO! But that’s not the case today. Because now we have a solution for all these questions which is no Dexter’s Lab. Well, we proudly call it The M.I.C.E. LAB.

Taking into account the wide possibilities of creativity in the young minds, Dr. Anirrudha Malpani, one of the top IVF specialits in Mumbai and Mr.Sandeep Senan, Founder & CEO of Evobi Automations Pvt Ltd (Bibox) came up with the solution of creating a tinkering lab which provides all the required resources to not only the medical students but also the Doctors to come up with the ideas that would help make a difference in the prognosis , diagnosis , treatment of the patient .Since they are exposed to the patients and their complaints on a daily basis ,the fact that they do come up with solutions for the same can’t be side-lined and hence they must be provided with the opportunity to do the same – This was righteously thought about by the Medical Education Unit of the Grant Government Medical College of Mumbai . Joint efforts of the MEU, Dr. Malpani and Mr.Sandeep Senan led to the inauguration of this Brain Child on 5th September 2018 named M.I.C.E. LAB –Medical Innovation Creativity and Entrepreneurship Lab which stands proudly on the 6th floor of the New Administrative Building in the campus of J J Hospital.

On the day of Inauguration, the lab held an exhibition of few pilot projects for the students on the various ideas that could possibly be used in a hospital set-up like a bed wetting sensor, an automated moving bed, gesture based patient alarm. This has held a huge impact on the students and inspired them to visit the lab from time to time and jot their ideas and work on it. Looking at the interest among the students the lab came up with exclusively interactive Five – Session–Course –Workshop and a one day extensive Medical Hackathon which succeeded in bringing up the best of the ideas from the students. Kudos to the efforts taken for the set-up of the lab. Hopefully it will become the hub of ideas and creativity just as the name suggests ….
