In a world where technology is rapidly transforming the landscape of healthcare, it has become crucial to equip medical students with the right tools and mindset to innovate, research, and adapt. With this vision, Medical Innovation Creativity & Entrepreneurship (M.I.C.E) Labs at Grant Government Medical College and Sir J.J. Hospital, Mumbai, successfully conducted a 10-day elective titled “Generative AI in Medical Research and Innovation” for 3rd MBBS students.
As the organising team, we at M.I.C.E Labs were proud to mentor 24 enthusiastic students, many of whom began their journey with little or no prior exposure to Artificial Intelligence. What followed was a powerful transformation—students not only learned the practical application of Generative AI tools but also produced four well-structured research papers by the end of the program.
This blog highlights the teaching methodology, tools introduced, student progress, and final learning outcomes—offering a model for how future-facing medical education can be delivered today.
Why Generative AI in Medical Education?
Generative AI is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s here, and it’s capable of revolutionizing medical education, research, and clinical practice. We chose this topic to bridge the gap between traditional research methodologies and the AI-powered workflows that are shaping the future of healthcare. The goal was simple: empower students to work smarter, innovate ethically, and harness AI to improve both learning and patient outcomes.

Curriculum Overview: A Day-by-Day Breakdown
Day 1 – Website Designing & Introduction to AI in Healthcare
Students explored how to build professional websites using Wix and WordPress, while also understanding how AI is integrated into healthcare systems globally.
Day 2 – Logic Building & AI Chatbot Development
Co-mentored by Dr. Vishal Jha, this session focused on designing AI-based chatbot solutions for TB patient support, where students brainstormed, pitched, and developed app logic.
Day 3 & 4 – Literature Review & Reference Management
With tools like Mendeley, Zotero, and SciSpace, students were introduced to efficient citation management and learned how to review literature systematically using PubMed.
Day 5 – Topic Finalization Using AI Discovery Tools
Students explored research ideas using Consensus, ResearchRabbit, and finalized their study on ‘3D Printing in Healthcare’ as a Knowledge, Attitude & Practice (KAP) survey.
Day 6 – Questionnaire Development with Ethical AI
A structured KAP questionnaire was designed using Generative AI, ensuring ethical framing of questions suitable for data collection.
Day 7 – Hands-on Data Analysis Using Jamovi
Students performed real statistical analysis—Chi-square, ANOVA, correlation, and more—followed by AI-assisted interpretation using ChatGPT.
Day 8 – Data Visualization for Impactful Research
Students learned how to make their findings visually engaging using tools like DataWrapper, Infogram, and Piktochart.
Day 9 – Formatting & Presentation with AI Support
Students utilized Microsoft Copilot and Canva for creating visually appealing research presentations.
Day 10 – Poster Making & Final Research Submission
The final day focused on designing research posters using Piktochart, and compiling all components of the research study for submission and presentation.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the 10-day elective, students were able to:
✅ Confidently navigate and apply AI tools in the research workflow
✅ Develop and design a complete research study from topic selection to analysis
✅ Use AI ethically and effectively in academic writing and data interpretation
✅ Create professional academic posters and websites for research dissemination
✅ Collaborate and pitch AI-powered healthcare solutions through app logic building
